Spring Has Sprung: Fresh Finds at Surf City Nights
Tonight, marks the very first Street Fair of the Spring 2014 season! So, there is no better time than now to check out HB’s local farmer’s fine and fresh produce.
I mean, lets be honest, when it come to grocery shopping, no one is thrilled or quick to volunteer. Crowded aisles, cold freezers, long check out lines, and your dogs never get to come in! Now, imagine, what is better than grocery shopping with the sun falling into the ocean in the background, soft music playing from every corner of the street, smiling faces of the happy merchants and vendors who line up alongside Main Street and tantalizing smells teasing and tickling your nose as you peruse? Not much! Surf City locals know what’s up though, that’s why each week our dedicated farmers, business owners and singers always show up for our city every Tuesday night to feed, entertain and bring a smile and a sense of local love to the neighborhood for a few hours at dusk.
As many of you know, all of us here in HB, have the opportunity to feed our families and support our neighboring famers at the same time by buying fresh, pesticide free, locally grown, and organic produce. So now that winter is over, think about brightening up your fridge and diet with beautiful, healthy, inexpensive, and local so-cal grown fruits and veggies.
So while you’re thinking about stocking up for this week’s meals for the fam, skip the Vons or Stater Bro’s tonight and cruise down to HB’s Surf City Street Fair and Farmers market and get the 101 on what is in season. Although, many of the farmers under the tents have great knowledge about the seasonal fruit and vegetables, here is a quick overview, according to the California Harvest Calendar, of what is lookin’ extra delicious during these last few days of March and what we can look forward to in April!
• Asparagus, Beets, Broccoli, cabbage, Carrots, Cauliflower, Celery, Cilantro, Fennel, Grapefruit, Blood Oranges, Leeks, Lemons, Mandarins, Orange-Navel, Parsley, Radishes, Spinach, Strawberries
• Bok Choy, Broccoli, Cabbage, Carrots, Cauliflower, Chard, Cilantro, Fennel, Kale, Leeks Lemons, Mandarins, Orange-Navel, Parsley, English Peas, Snap Peas, Radishes, Spinach, Strawberries, Turnips
And thanks to that little sprinkle we got this morning the fruits and veggies will be on point! Even though it has been a little chilly this week, but the weather is supposed to be warming up around noon today and sunset is at 7:06 pm. So, bundle up, bring your disposable grocery bags, you dog, and your friends and cruise down to Main Street to check out the awesome live performers and the delicious fresh spring produce.
